The annual festival will take place on the Golden Mile

A huge festival is set to take place in the city to celebrate one of the most prominent figures in the Hindu religion. Leicester’s Hindu community will soon take to the streets of Belgrave to mark the birthday of Lord Ganesh.

On Sunday, September 24, there will be a colourful procession to kick start festivities at 11am, filled with music, dance and traditional food. A statue of the Lord Ganesh will be carried along Belgrave Road starting at the Shivalaya Mandir, and ending at Cossington Park where there will be various stage performances and activities.

The procession is part of a festival, also known as Ganesh Chaturthi, in its 33rd year of celebration in the city. It will span across five days.

The festival will begin on the Tuesday with a launch event followed by lunch, which will be held at the Shivalaya Mandir, in Belgrave Road, from 1pm to 2pm. On each day, worshippers will take part in puja – which is a worship ritual practised by Hindus.

On Wednesday, September 20, and Thursday, September 21, worshippers will take part in morning prayers from 9am, which will be followed by a special thanksgiving ceremony on both days at Shivalaya Mandir.

Friday, September 22, is expected to be a jam packed day with prayers at the Mandir in the morning at 9am. At 7pm there will be a special thanksgiving ceremony followed by dances traditional dances.

On Saturday, September 23, there will be special prayers that start at 10am and worshippers will gather again in the evening to watch Garba – a form of Gujarati dance that will be performed from 7.30pm.

Alongside the vibrant procession taking place on Sunday, September 24, there will also be an immersion ceremony, where a statue of Ganesh will be submerged in water at 3pm. This marks the beginning of Ganesh’s journey to his heavenly home.
